Modern and Bright Playroom Reveal

This combination play/workspace has been in the works a long time! Between skim-coating all the walls, and then figuring out the “cloffice” situation, it took nearly five months to function the way we intended it to. Now that it’s finally completed, I felt it was time to share all the details and provide links for those who had asked! If you’re interested in an abridged version of this playroom tour, head to my Instagram and watch the stories behind the space.

Modern Bohemian Playroom Design Inspiration

Before jumping into any of the design elements, I knew I wanted this space to be a departure from the rest of our home. So much of our home is designed with a modern organic focus, and this palette was a break from that. The whole purpose of this room was for Evie, and I wanted it to be a space that would be hers - to play. So I purposefully designed it to be colorful and utilize texture and storage in all ways possible. The starting point for this space was the wallpaper from Tempaper. It was bold, bright, and slightly bohemian, which felt like the perfect direction for this space.

I pulled my paint and other secondary colors from this peel & stick wallpaper (Bohemia) throughout the design process. Since the room is small (9x14), I wanted to pack a punch. The 3/4 wall was a last-minute decision that paid off big time. I love the modern touch it gives to the room and feels like it gives the illusion of a bigger space.

Playroom Storage Ideas

I had big ideas from the start on how I could use every inch of this space for storage. Not just for storing toys, but also keeping linens, craft supplies, and misc. In the upper portion of the closet. I wanted an easy system for the whole family to follow. A wall cubby system flanking both sides of the wall was the obvious answer to that. The foldable linen bins with rope handles make it easy to pull out and put away.

I used metal bin clips and sprayed them white to blend in with the basket. Then, using a circuit, I labeled them accordingly. I use reusable zippered bags for toys with multiple pieces or parts to keep everything together. These work very well keeps the order of chaos when dealing with small puzzle pieces.

Large toys too big for the basket are placed on top of the cubbies and swapped in/out with other toys. The wall baskets were a recent addition thanks to the genius of TikTok and made perfect sense for soft toys. The Ikea picture ledges display seasonal books, which I rotate monthly.

Playroom Design Elements

Of course, no room - even the playroom is complete without some cool design elements. Initially, I wasn't planning on adding a couch in here, if anything, maybe an oversized chair. But then, I happened to come across this 2-piece modular sofa from West Elm and knew it would be perfect for this space. It's large but compact and very comfortable! Evie climbs all over it, and it has held its shape beautifully.

The pillows were brought in from another room and matched the color perfectly. The knitted throw blanket was also an addition we already had on hand. I also managed to find this woven ottoman on sale and thought it nicely complemented the overall bohemian style.

Moving to a more intentional design choice, the TV was something we couldn't avoid. We had wanted a designated TV in that space, especially for kid's shows or as Evie grows and gets older. My dad kindly made this frame fit perfectly (even with the TV's curve!)

Playroom Lighting

The room's lighting took a bit of trial and error to get right, and while the basket light is temporary for now, the wall sconces were a must! I loved the gold finish and modern lines. Poly and Bark had many great mid-century current lighting options, but ultimately I felt these fit within the space perfectly! The round glass is an unexpected element that adds to this playroom's funkiness and helps tie in other aspects of brass and gold used within the room.

Speaking of gold sconces, the one in the closet (or cloffice) is used with a rechargeable lightbulb! It gives me more direct light when I'm working late and helps provide the office alcove more purpose. I'm hoping to remove the basket light over the next few weeks and add a focal light in the center of the room. Stay tuned on Instagram for updates!
