Your Guide to Better Fitting Denim

One of my main fashion goals has long been finding the perfect fitting jeans. I’m a denim-lover through and through and have tried my fair share of different brands, styles, and fits. From High-to-mid rise to the god-awful low-rise (never again.) To styles like skinny, straight leg, and flared denim, which I’ve been loving! I rarely find myself reaching for new everyday denim, especially when my staple brands deliver on both fit and style. I’ll share how to shop for the best denim fit for your body in today's post!

So a little about my denim preferences:

  • Not too, high-waisted! - Gone are the days of low-rise jeans, and I really can’t be more thankful for that. But, now comes the dilemma between high-waisted and extreme high-rise denim. I’m 5’7” and prefer my denim to hit right at or just below my navel. I find anything that hits higher than this starts to sit awkwardly and uncomfortably on my lower ribs.

  • Ankle Cut: Unless they’re flared, I prefer all my denim to hit at the ankle or just above. Length is SUCH an important indicator of good fitting denim. Sure, you can get jeans altered or hemmed but, I’m lucky to have an arsenal of denim brands that don’t need any adjustments post-purchase. If you find yourself having to have, your jeans tailored, be sure to first check with the retailer you are purchasing from. Many stores will do this for free (for cardmembers) or for a small additional fee!

  • Zippered or Button Fly: For non-stretch denim, Button-fly is the way to go! I feel like it holds you in better and keeps the shape without having a zipper continually fall. For stretch-denim, I always say zippered is better, especially if the rise is 9-10”, you do not want buttons cramming into your stomach!

THE BEST EVERYDAY DENIM

Let me start by saying these are personal favorites and brands that offer a wide range of sizes for different body shapes. I wish more brands jumped on board to be more inclusive when it came to offering petite-plus, but it’s often hard to come by. Madewell offer’s a range of sizes between 23-33 and has a line dedicated to Petites and curvey denim. Similarly, Ambercrombie & Fitch offer premium denim in a size range of 24-33, with a line curvy love. Another inclusive brand is American Eagle. Their denim is affordable and pretty well-made for the price! They seem to be the best (as far as size inclusivity), offering a range from 000 short through 24 Long.

What style and brand of denim do you reach for most?

Cheers ~

Kelly
