Organic Modern Dining Room Makeover

In early July (2022), I kicked off a 3-week dining room transformation complete with two DIY projects and new modern furnishings. This project is part of a more significant effort to bring some cohesion to our home decor and move towards a modern organic approach. The previous dining room was in great shape but was slightly jumbled between styles. For example, the fireplace was primed in a prior project and came off farmhouse/cottage-like. My goal for this project was to give this room a proper head-to-toe makeover to reflect the style of the rest of our home. Let’s dive into the before photos to catch a glimpse of the space I was working with.

The dining room space in our home is long and narrow and sits to the right of our kitchen. Because of the floor plan, we were limited to a rectangular dining table. A pair of french doors open onto our deck and provide a fair amount of light to the room. While these doors are great, they present an obstacle for layout and somewhat place things for us.

In the “before” photos, the styling was a bit all over the map. It read a bit cottage, but at times also coastal. Both styles are great; they aren’t what my taste reflects. We sold many previous furniture to make way for modern dining room essentials from Living Spaces. You can see more about why we chose each piece and get direct links for each product.

Organic Modern Dining Room Reveal

When I initially designed the mood board for this dining room, I knew it would be a challenge. The fireplace alone was a 7+ day long project that I’m still fine-tuning, but it was 100% with the mess! Sometimes going with your gut and diving in is the best bet. For weeks I second-guessed the project, but piece by piece, it came together and ended up looking very close to my original plan. I will dive into the organic modern dining table, chairs, rug, and accessories selected for the space!

If there’s one thing I love more than anything when designing a project, it’s the actual installation of furniture. Tweaking the layout, rearranging the accessories, and adding greenery give me all the thrills. Kevin jokes that this is when I’m most in the zone, especially when it comes time to shoot photos. This room was a blast to style, thanks to the beautiful pieces gifted from Living Spaces. We’ve been big fans of their designs for a while (our bed is from them!), and they create quality and contemporary furniture.

When it came time to select a dining table, I knew the legs of the table needed to be sleek, streamlined, and modern! I didn’t want curves, trestle supports, and vintage nods but a straightforward design that lent itself to a modern organic style. The Chandler Dining Table (275782) is a beautiful shade of brown and solid in its craftsmanship. Underneath the table sits a gold alternating striped rug from the Nate Berkus And Jeremiah Brent collection. They have many beautiful pieces in their collection with Living Spaces, so much so that we also picked up another rug for our living room! The Matias Gold Rug is plush underfoot and the perfect foundation for this organic modern dining room.

The chairs were purchased in the early spring from AllModern and had been on my wishlist for YEARS! We finally pulled the trigger and bought them when they went on sale, and they have been a favorite ever since! They are incredibly comfortable and pair nicely with the dining table.

Another portion of this project was reclaiming a portion of the room that we used for my daughter’s art table. We decided to move this into her playroom and utilize the space for additional storage! The Piece Espresso Curio (254417) was the perfect solution to this. We moved all of our wine storage from the console into this cabinet and love how organized everything is. It has hanging spots for glassware and tons of room for additional bar accessories or alcohol.

Most of the styling elements in this room were items I already owned or were in other rooms of the house. I picked up a few odds and ends from Hobby Lobby, including the tall candlesticks and a few items in the bookcases. The artwork in the room is minimal, and that was something that I did on purpose. I didn’t want to clutter the space or have too many focal points. The art in between the two wall sconces was painted by my husband, daughter, and me!

I purchased a clearance canvas frame from Hobby Lobby and painted it directly on top. It was an affordable way to achieve the look we wanted while staying within budget. Plus, it’s a reminder of a fun family project we can tell friends and family about! Despite the challenges this project presented, it was still fun to do, pushing me outside my comfort zone.
