How to Organize Under the Kitchen Sink

It’s the start of a new year which can only mean that many of you are setting intentions to get organized! Unfortunately, many of my own commonly used closets, drawers, and cabinets often are the last to get the tidy treatment. This includes the space underneath my kitchen sink.

Even with just two years in our home, the space beneath our kitchen sink had seen better days. Finding what we needed became impossible with empty containers, identical products, and unused cleaning supplies. A new year was the only excuse I needed to jumpstart my organizational journey and bring you along for the ride. In today’s post, I’ll share the products and steps I utilized to get the cabinet beneath my kitchen sink clean, orderly, and, most importantly, functional for my family.

It’s no secret that the internet likes and is attracted to pretty, organized spaces. Just take shows like the Home Edit, who also launched this affordable line at Walmart! Finding a balance between implementing an organizational system and upkeeping it will pay off in the long run. Know yourself and try to uphold an orderly system that works for your lifestyle and isn’t just pretty. With that said, let’s jump into the how behind getting organized!


First things first, before buying any containers, make sure your space is clean and clear. You’ll want to take measurements and review your inventory of products beforehand. Knowing exactly how much space you have will better equip you with a game plan for seeing which containers will fit. I like to draw out a visual map and label what needs containing.

With my measurements and visual guide in tow, I headed to Walmart.com to order some essentials for the project. With limited space (due to the garbage disposal and water lines, I purchased smaller cosmetic acrylic containers, which worked perfectly. An acrylic Lazy Susan is a perfect tool for more oversized products that would remain in their containers and vary in size. For commonly used cleaning sprays, such as all-purpose spray and rug cleaner, utilize refillable glass bottles and buy in bulk to avoid additional waste.

How to Organize Underneath a Kitchen Sink

Since this cabinet was beneath a sink, I wanted to add a non-slip mat to collect and prevent any spills or potential leaks from damaging the wood. These liners are sold in various sizes and colors and are a fun way to add a pop of color. I decided on a simple light-grey check print from Walmart for our home.

When it came time to go through the cleaning products we had, I realized that many of them were solutions we had never used. Throwing these away gave up extra space and allowed the new acrylic containers to fit better.

Our kitchen has a smaller footprint, and even with a double sink, the cabinet beneath doesn’t hold much. With this in mind utilizing the entire space was key to maximizing our storage. Of course, this doesn’t exclude the cabinet door! I used self-adhesive hooks and a paper towel holder to save space on the cabinet shelf for more essential items. Cleaning supplies that I use daily are placed front and center for easy access.


Items that are more seldomly used are stored near the back of the cabinet. I used a metal container to hold extra reusable cleaning tools and kept them near the front of the cabinet. I stacked refills for our dish soap on the acrylic containers and added a roll of garbage bags on the opposite side.

Your Under Sink Organization Check-List

  • Take everything out, review inventory. Toss old or expired products, consolidate any duplicates.

  • Clean everything, including the doors.

  • Take Measurements, and see what needs containing

  • Create a visual reference for what goes where and how the containers will fit.

  • Place Walmart.com order for organizing essentials

  • Organize and arrange containers.

  • Remove and discard excess packaging, wrappers, etc. Decant commonly used cleaning products in reusable bottles.

  • Create and uphold a system to keep this tidy.
