The great thing about living in a home all your own is being able to design it how you see fit. For many of us, this means adding touches that ring true to the people we are and the things we enjoy. When Kevin and I first started to decide on a style direction for our home, we knew that there still needed to be special or unique elements to us both. I’ve talked a lot about the importance of mixing new with old and incorporating vintage to create a well-balanced home.
I haven’t touched on how to style and arrange these unique and nostalgic collectible items. We’re partnering with PLAYMOBIL® to demonstrate how we decorate with these items to showcase our unique style.
How to Find Special Pieces For Your Home
If you’re a long-time reader, you’ll know that I have an affinity with all things circa the 1970s! Everything from classic California memorabilia to the style and design of modern furniture and clothing. I’ve collected vintage artwork and print ads for years and love how they create conversation within a space or room. I grew up with a dad who loved collecting vintage signs, toy firetrucks, and PLAYMOBIL sets, so I’m sure this is where my love for vintage and collectibles came from.
Part of the fun of collecting vintage is the hunt! Finding and collecting is something that takes time, but when you come across something special, it’s something you’ll hold on to for years to come. One of the great things about long-standing brands like PLAYMOBIL is that they’re built to stand the test of time. Their high-quality materials and attention to detail make them something you’ll want to pass down or keep in the family.
Knowing this, I’m sure it comes as no surprise how excited I was to find PLAYMOBIL’s new Volkswagen Playsets available at Walmart! The 1960 model VW Beetle and the 1962 VW Camping Bus hold that sense of 1970's retro style in a refined and polished way, making them the perfect addition to my collection.
When I found out they were available for purchase I placed an online order right away! Shopping options like same-day delivery or drive-up make shopping with Walmart an absolute breeze. Interested in trying out these products? Hover over the photo above to click through to Walmart.com

How to Style and Display Collectables
It can be easy to get caught up in collecting and never actually take the time to display your finds. This is a position that many collectors find themselves in. In actuality seeing your favorite pieces on display is the whole purpose of purchasing them in the first place! SO, if you take nothing else away from this post, at least take some time to display your treasured items! I wanted to touch on a few different collectibles and make sure I shared enough styling ideas. Below I’ve listed commonly collected items that you may currently own.
Toys / Hobbies - Vintage toy collectibles and a true treasure, especially if you have an avid collector living in your home. Rather than stuffing them in an attic or a box, bring them out! I realize that this goes against many people’s desires to keep them mint. But, my feeling is that its true purpose is to bring you joy and to have it stashed away is something you’ll never see. You can set up or arrange your items in a shadow box for display, place them on a bookshelf as I did in our daughter’s room.
Posters / Ad / Artwork - The easiest way to preserve these is to have them professionally framed! If you’re less concerned about the presentation and just gravitate towards the overall style, you can easily pop them into any standard frame yourself. I also love when vintage ads are collected or displayed on a mood-board or pin-board (I plan to do this in my new office!) They add an element of fun and color that can inspire you in more ways than one.
Jewelry / Accessories - I find the best place to keep them is within practical storage. You can also show them on a jewelry bust, frame them in a shadow box, or arrange them on a stand.
Accessories like scarves can double as artwork (as seen below) or be displayed in a frame or shadowbox.
Household Items - This has been a new avenue of collecting for me, especially when it comes to vintage crystals or vases. My best styling advice is to USE THEM! Glass and crystal are made to last and, with reasonable care, can continue to last for years to come. Vintage kitchen tools, bowls, or cutting boards may be best if used as display pieces.
One of the best things about picking up collectibles or vintage pieces is the ability to keep them in your family or purchase with the intention of passing them down to a child or another family member.
